Ultimate Makeover Features Translucent "Meditation Room"

Gallina policarb 20mm, together with Duo-Gard's translucent wall systems with optional Nanogel^® created this 16 1/2 ft. square "Meditation Room" for the Crawford-Smith family's house in Blacksburg VA, featured on ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition February 12, 2006.

This house was designed by the Virginia Tech School of Architecture Design Team. General contractor was Building Specialists Inc. of Virginia. Project photographer was Richard Boyd.

The double-glazed Meditation Room integrates exterior and interior walls of Gallina policarb 20mm translucent polycarbonate in a custom-engineered framing system by Duo-Gard. The flutes of the polycarbonate are filled with Nanogel^®. These translucent silica aerogel particles provide exceptional thermal insulation, sound reduction and high-quality diffused light. The system transmits 20% visible light, diffused to create a comfortable interior space with an insulating R-value 10. The dual walls are separated by an air space containing an LED lighting system which contributes to a soothing yet visually dramatic environment.

This was an unusual opportunity, and Gallina was proud to participate. However, we're custom design/build primarily for the commercial, industrial, educational and healthcare manufacturer. This high-performance technology requires professional design, handling and installation, and Duo-Gard serve the residential market through architects, interior designers and contractors.
